Having been involved with records management since the late 60’s I have experience with both the design and installation of records systems and registries as well as managing and auditing them. Having worked for central government and local authorities I also have among my clients: Compaq, Iron Mountain, Cornwell Associates, Cimtech (University of Hertfordshire), the Highways Agency, DMI (Malta) Ltd, the Crown Prosecution Service, Smurfit (Viking Direct), the Scottish Drugs Enforcement Agency and more than 60 local authorities.
I am actively involved in British and International Standards through membership of the UK Association of Information and Image Management (UKAIIM) Standards Committee. (The organisation behind BIP 0008 – A Code of Practice for Legal Admissibility and Evidential Weight of Information Stored Electronically).
I am the author of Records Management - A Guide to Disaster Prevention and Recovery previously published by the British Standards Institution (now available direct from Batchelor Associates) and am actively involved in the content of the BSI Guide to the Practical Implementation of the Data Protection Act 1998 and the Guide to the Freedom of Information Act. I have also authored a publication for BSI entitled A Guide to Developing a Retention and Disposal Schedule for Business Information. This includes how to carry out an information audit.
My interest in Retention and Destruction Schedules has led to me to identify the types of records within the UK that need to be legally retained. This has involved researching over 200,000 pages of legislation and codes of practice to enable me to supply retention and disposal schedules for local/central government and the private sector. Over 60 local authorities are currently using one of my schedules. I was a major contributor to the Records Management Society’s Guidance on Records Retention
My advice on the retention of health and safety information appears in Croner’s Health and Safety at Work.
Published articles on records management have appeared in professional journals such as the Records Management Society Bulletin and the Records Management Journal.
I regularly speak on Records Management issues – especially on information audits, retention schedules and planning for disasters.
I was a member of the project team for the European Commission’s - Model Requirements for the Management of Electronic Records (MoReq)
